Shelby American: the legend born from the Cobra
Carroll Shelby was first known as a racing driver. After an international career crowned notably by a victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1959 with Aston Martin, he gradually turned to car building and tuning.
In 1962, he founded Shelby American in California to develop a sports car combining the road manners of a European sports car with the power and mechanical simplicity of an American V8. The British AC Ace formed the basis of this project.
Shelby contacted AC Cars after the British company had lost its Bristol engine supplier. He then looked for an American engine suited to his project and turned to Ford.
The first Cobra received the Ford 260 ci V8. The Ford 289 ci engine followed and became one of the model's iconic powerplants. Shelby American notably presented the first Cobra, CSX2000, at the 1962 New York Auto Show.
The birth of the Cobra
The AC Ace was a lightweight British sports car, originally fitted with various six-cylinder engines. Among the best-known powerplants was the 2-litre Bristol engine, derived from the BMW 328 mechanicals.
When the supply of Bristol engines came to an end, AC looked for a new powerplant. It was in this context that Carroll Shelby proposed transforming the AC Ace to accept a Ford V8.
The first Cobra was fitted with the Ford 260 ci V8, roughly 4.3 litres. This combination of a lightweight British chassis and a powerful American engine produced a car with remarkable performance for its era.
The Ford 289 ci V8, around 4.7 litres, was then adopted. The 289 Cobras enjoyed many competition successes, notably against the Chevrolet Corvette on American circuits.
For high-speed European circuits, Shelby American developed a more aerodynamic version of the Cobra. Designer Peter Brock created the coupe bodywork that would become the Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe.
The Daytona Coupe allowed Shelby American to beat Ferrari in the world GT championship. In 1965, Shelby American won the World Manufacturers' GT Championship.
The Shelby GT350 and GT500
After the success of the Cobra, Carroll Shelby collaborated with Ford on a new project based on the Mustang.
The Ford Mustang was an immense success from its launch in 1964. Ford, however, wanted to strengthen its sporting image and develop a version capable of shining in competition.
The answer took the form of the Shelby GT350.
Production of the first GT350 began for the 1965 model year. The cars were prepared by Shelby American at its California facilities and received numerous modifications designed to improve their performance and on-track behaviour.
The GT350 used the high-performance Ford 289 ci V8. The modifications covered in particular the intake, exhaust, suspension, brakes and various chassis components.
The car was developed to compete in the Sports Car Club of America's B Production category. In competition, the GT350 won the national B Production championship in 1965.
Shelby American produced 562 GT350s in 1965, far exceeding the number required for homologation.
The GT350 quickly became one of the most iconic Mustangs of its generation.
Shelby GT500
It appeared in 1967.
Unlike the GT350, which retained the high-performance 289 ci V8, the GT500 received a Ford 428 ci V8, roughly 7 litres. Shelby American states that 2,048 examples of the original GT500 were built for 1967.
The GT500 offered more torque and a different focus from the GT350. Its more imposing exterior styling and big-block engine quickly made it one of the most recognisable versions of the Shelby Mustang family. It represents a more powerful and more luxurious evolution of the Shelby Mustang.
The range evolved further in 1968 with the arrival of the GT500KR, for King of the Road.

A sporting heritage that lives on
Shelby American has profoundly marked the history of the American automobile.
The Cobra allowed Carroll Shelby to realise his idea of a car combining a lightweight European-derived chassis with an American V8. The Cobras' competition successes then helped establish Shelby American's international reputation.
The collaboration with Ford then gave birth to the Shelby Mustang GT350 and GT500. The GT350 distinguished itself in competition in the SCCA's B Production category, while Shelby American also took part in the Ford GT programme and the early seasons of the Trans-Am championship.
Carroll Shelby's heritage did not stop with the historic models. Shelby American still produces performance vehicles today, continuation Cobras and Shelby models based on modern Ford Mustangs. The company also maintains an official registry of Shelby vehicles.
Today, the Shelby name remains associated with a particular combination of performance, competition and American engineering.
For collectors, authenticity, chassis number, provenance, original configuration, history and restoration quality play an essential role in a Shelby's value.
