What sets the F8 Spider apart
- 3.9-litre twin-turbo V8, 720 hp at 8,000 rpm and 770 Nm.
- Engine derived from the 488 Pista, four-time International Engine of the Year (2016-2019).
- Retractable hardtop in 14 seconds, at up to 45 km/h, with no loss of cabin space.
- 0-100 km/h in 2.9 s, 0-200 km/h in 8.2 s, 340 km/h top speed.
- 1,400 kg dry, meaning without fluids. 1.94 kg/hp and 185 hp/l: this power per litre was already achieved by the 488 Pista Spider.
The end of a bloodline
The F8 was unveiled in September 2019 to replace the 488 Spider. In 2023, it closed a chapter opened in 1975 by the 308 GTB. It ranks among the last non-hybrid mid-engined V8 Ferraris. Its successor, the 296, has a plug-in hybrid V6. This pairs combustion and electric drive and can charge from a socket.
Orders ceased before 2023; the last deliveries took place in 2023. Collectors follow this detail closely.
Aerodynamics and efficiency
The front radiators are angled rearwards, unlike the 488 Spider. Cooling improves, but less underbody area is available for downforce. Downforce is the aerodynamic force that presses the car onto the road.
Ferrari redesigned the hot-air extraction channels to maximise downforce and cut drag, the resistance of air. The design uses the interaction between outgoing airflow and the front wheels. The result is 10 % more overall aerodynamic efficiency than the 488 Spider.
